What Not to Say

While traveling with my boss, there was a discussion about a woman who had just committed suicide.

Friend One:  I can't believe she would do that.  What a coward!

Friend Two:  I think suicide is the most selfish thing anyone can do.

Friend One:  Her family will never get over it.  It just infuriates me that someone could be so insensitve.

I started crumbling inside when I listened to this conversation.

Here is the thing....When you are that low, low enough to want to kill yourself, you sincerely believe in your heart that everyone will be better off without you.  You think that it is the most UNSELFISH thing to do.  You think that it will hurt your family for awhile but that in time they will forget about you and even better, be happier that they don't have to worry about you anymore.

In fact, instead of being a coward, you feel brave.  Brave enough to better your family and friends lives.  You feel like you are doing them a great favor.

Obviously, someone who is suicidal is not in there right mind.  Because everything they are thinking is untrue.  It is all lies that depression is feeding the mind.

When a depressed person hears comments like these, it makes them feel even less human then they already feel.  It makes them want to hold the hand of the troubled soul they were talking about and jump off the bridge with them.

Other comments that I have over heard....

"Why is she so depressed?  She has nothing to be depressed about!"

Depressed people are not stupid.  We realize that yes, there are people out there in FAR WORSE circumstances then we are.  When you are depressed and everything in your life is fine and beautiful, it makes you feel even more worthless.  Knowing there is no cause for your depression.  You feel like a freak for feeling the way you do.

"Just get over it!"

BELEIVE ME.  We would if we could.

I guess i just want to say to please be careful.  With your words.  I know you may not mean too, but sometimes you may be overheard by someone who is really struggling. Someone who appears to be happy and healthy on the outside, but inside there is alot of torment going on.  You could bring them down even further.
